In the summer of 2024, we were thrilled to host an in-person outdoor event that brought together our diverse community of Afghan, Arabic, and Punjabi-speaking clients. This gathering not only fostered cultural exchange but also helped build connections across different backgrounds. The event celebrated the rich tapestry of cultures within our community, offering participants a chance to enjoy a wide variety of ethnic foods that reflected the unique traditions of each group. From savory Afghan dishes to aromatic Arabic flavors and flavorful Punjabi specialties, the event was a true culinary journey that showcased the diverse cultural heritage of our attendees.
Held at Bear Creek Park in Surrey, the event provided families, including many newcomers, the opportunity to engage in a range of outdoor activities. These activities were designed to introduce participants to basic outdoor skills, while also encouraging interaction and bonding through fun games and team-building exercises. Attendees had the chance to explore various activities, from traditional games of different cultures to discovering local National Parks and their significance. These experiences not only helped participants improve their physical skills but also enhanced their understanding of the natural beauty that surrounds them in their new community.
Throughout the event, SUCCESS staff ensured that safety was a top priority. Newcomers and their children were encouraged to actively participate in the activities while maintaining a safe environment, following all necessary precautions. As a result, participants felt secure and supported, allowing them to fully enjoy the experience.
The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn new skills, try different foods, and connect with others in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. By engaging with people from different cultural backgrounds, they felt more confident and comfortable in their ability to interact and communicate with others. The event also created a deeper sense of belonging, as participants not only gained a greater understanding of each other’s cultures but also forged lasting connections that will contribute to a stronger, more inclusive community.
Ultimately, this event was a celebration of multiculturalism and the beauty of diversity, providing an enriching experience that helped newcomers feel more integrated, empowered, and connected to their new surroundings.
