Since we had a great time at Open Doors last year, Family Literacy Program staff decided to introduce more clients to this child-friendly family event at the Surrey Operations facility in Newton on Saturday, June 8. Some of us learned to take a bus to the event while others studied a map along with the address to help navigate their way to the Surrey Operations Centre in their own vehicles. Clients and their older children learned about how the city maintains sewer, water, and road infrastructure throughout the city as well as how they can keep Surrey clean by sorting waste items properly. Younger children enjoyed sitting in a fire truck, assisting with operating a backhoe on the lap of a Surrey city worker, bouncing in the bouncy castle, and collecting edible and non-edible free goodies. “Thank you so much. It’s a really great festival,” enthused a husband-wife duo who came by car with two young daughters, making sure City staff gave free handouts to everyone in the larger group.

This trip is worth a repeat in 2020!
