S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Burnaby/New Westminster ISIP and Queensborough Community Centre welcomed the community to celebrate Diwali on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017. Diwali is the festival of lights, prosperity and wisdom and the event brought the public together to learn, experience, and enjoy this South Asian holiday. The event included local performances such as Bhangra dance, Indian martial arts, and other forms of performance art.  There were many booths offering henna art, turban tying, diya (candle holder) painting for kids, as well as information about New Westminster Parks, Culture and Recreation Program and New Westminster Museum and Archives, providing an opportunity for people to experience the South Asian culture as well as celebrate diversity in the community. With the support of client-volunteers from S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Burnaby/New Westminster “We Volunteer Here” Program and Community Partners, Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar (Khalsa Diwan Society New Westminster, BC), this event was very successful with over 300 attendees celebrating and learning about each other’s heritage.
