On a sunny Saturday in June, a group of enthusiastic Family Literacy Program participants enjoyed a day out participating in Open House activities at the Surrey Operations Centre during the Surrey Doors Open events. Participants learned how to read a bus schedule, check the time for the next available bus, and the importance of being on time in order to be part of a group activity. At the event, there were many activities that grabbed the attention of the families, including: face-painting; hands-on activities; free snacks; and handouts which included plants, reusable shopping bags and bamboo toilet paper. Most importantly, parents and their children learned about the “Three P’s” which are the only acceptable items to flush down a toilet! The participants learned about sustainability and how the Operations Centre supports the maintenance of infrastructure throughout the City of Surrey.
